The Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate (ANZUP) Cancer Trials Group recently held another successful  Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM),  from July 9 to 11, 2023, at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The event brought together leading experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals in the field of genitourinary (GU) cancers to discuss the latest advancements in treatment, research, and supportive care, and was ably led by Co-Convenors Ben Tran and Renu Eapen.

Themed ‘Bouncing Back,’ the ASM facilitated in-depth conversations on how individuals and systems have adapted and transformed in response to the challenges of the pandemic, as well as the impacts of GU cancers.

Over three days, delegates had the opportunity to engage with eight international experts and numerous national leaders, exploring a wide range of topics related to GU cancer diagnosis, treatment, and management. The international faculty included Andrea Apolo, Laurien Buffart, Ananya Choudhury, Darren Feldman, Rebecca Martin, Sima Porten, Bertrand Tombal and Alex Wyatt. These experts provided invaluable global perspectives on the significant challenges faced by GU cancer experts and played a vital role in enriching the discussions throughout the meeting.

The diverse program included informative sessions such as The Perfect Pitch, the MDT Masterclass, Translational and Supportive Care breakfast sessions, the Nurses Symposium, plenary sessions, ANZUP Trials in Action, and engaging debates and poster presentations. With the active participation of over 80 speakers, panellists, session chairs, and poster presenters, the event showcased the depth of knowledge within ANZUP’s membership, which has grown to exceed 2,200 members.

The annual free Community Engagement Forum, held in conjunction with the ASM, offered an exceptional opportunity for the public to interact with experienced healthcare professionals and patient advocates. Engaging presentations and panel discussions covered vital topics such as quality of life, treatment choices, survivorship, intimacy impacts, and the cost of cancer care. The forum not only educated the community about ANZUP and its clinical trials research program but also provided a platform for direct engagement with field experts.

In addition, the engagement generated on social media during this year’s ANZUP ASM ANZUP was tremendous. With close to 1.7 million #ANZUP23 impressions and over 500 tweets, the online conversations and participation on Twitter were truly remarkable. The event also saw the remarkable attendance of nearly 450 delegates, not only demonstrating ANZUP’s reputation for delivering high-quality, academically rigorous, educational, and entertaining ASMs, but also representing the highest number of delegates to date.

The ANZUP convening committee would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to all the speakers, sponsors, chairs, delegates, participants, committee members, and organizers for their invaluable contributions to the resounding success of #ANZUP23.

The positive outcomes and enriching discussions from this year’s ASM pave the way for the eagerly anticipated #ANZUP24 ASM, to be held in Gold Coast. Save the date and join ANZUP for another remarkable event, led by Co-Convenors Matt Roberts and Aaron Hansen.
