Eva’s main paper today is on the challenges of cancer care for the LGBTQ+ community – she’s joined by Dr Liz Ahern to discuss this important issue.

Professor Eva Segelov

Eva Segelov

Professor Eva Segelov is a Medical Oncologist and is Director of Oncology at Monash University and Monash Health, Melbourne, Victoria, previously Senior Medical Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Clinic and Associate Professor of Medicine, University of New South Wales.

Eva has an interest in academic clinical trials in GI and breast cancer and has been a member of the AGITG since 2003. She has clinical trials expertise, links with national and international trials groups, and extensive experience with adult medical education.

Dr Craig Underhill

Craig Underhill

Dr Craig Underhill completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery in 1987 at Melbourne University. He completed medical oncology training in Melbourne and worked as the Senior Clinical Research Registrar at Guy’s Hospital, London.

In 1998 arrived in Albury-Wodonga and established a medical oncology practice and clinical trials unit which has developed expertise and infrastructure to ensure the initiation of high quality trials. The research Unit lead by Dr Underhill has twice been awarded NSW Premier’s Award for Innovation in Cancer Clinical Trials, the inaugural award in 2009 and then again in 2012.

Dr Underhill chaired a working party that was instrumental in securing $65 million in federal funding for The Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre which opened in September 2016.

Dr Underhill is the VCCC Regional Oncology Lead and advocates for the increased access to clinical trials for regional Victorians and leads the VCCC teletrials program.

Dr Elizabeth Ahearn

Liz Ahern

Dr Ahern is a clinician-researcher dedicated to improving cancer treatments for patients through translational immune-oncology research. She trained as a consultant physician with specialisation in medical oncology and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. She undertook PhD candidature in preclinical cancer immunology at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research and submitted her dissertation entitled Targeting receptor activator of NF-kB pathways in combination immunotherapy in July 2020. She is an investigator on four ongoing translational oncology projects arising from her PhD which have received grants to the value of over AUD$3.3M, including a phase IB/II neoadjuvant immunotherapy trial in lung cancer currently recruiting at multiple sites (POPCORN, ANZCTR – Registration). Dr Ahern relocated to Monash in September 2020 to further her career as a clinican researcher in cancer immunology, and is the principal investigator for neuro-oncology trials at Monash. She works clinically at Clinical Trials Centre Clayton, Monash Medical Centre and the Moorabbin Hospital in early phase/phase one trials, CNS, lung and cutaneous cancers and melanoma. Dr Ahern received a Postdoctoral Fellowship scholarship for 2021 from the School of Medicine, Monash University to continue research in tumour immunology and lung cancer.
