What issues inspire young oncologists in Australia today? What are their greatest challenges and hopes for the future? Join Eva Segelov as she finds out in The OJC Meets YOGA!

YOGA is the Young Oncology Group of Australia, an organisation designed to support the transition from advanced trainee to consultant.

Eva chats candidly with Jess Smith and Milita Zaheed from the YOGA group. Covering everything from EMR management to work life balance, COVID to public speaking, CV writing to diverse training pathways… In today’s episode we take a deep dive into the issues effecting young oncologists today.

Professor Eva Segelov

Eva Segelov

Professor Eva Segelov is a Medical Oncologist and is Director of Oncology at Monash University and Monash Health, Melbourne, Victoria, previously Senior Medical Oncologist at St Vincent’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Private Hospital and St Vincent’s Clinic and Associate Professor of Medicine, University of New South Wales.

Eva has an interest in academic clinical trials in GI and breast cancer and has been a member of the AGITG since 2003. She has clinical trials expertise, links with national and international trials groups, and extensive experience with adult medical education. Connect with Eva on Twitter here: @profevasegelov

Dr Jess Smith

Jess Smith

Dr Jessica Smith is a medical oncologist who works in Western Sydney and has experience in clinical trials and immunotherapy. Jess worked as the Translational Research Fellow at Westmead, and is now undertaking a PhD looking at the interactions of melanoma therapies with radiation treatment on a cellular level. She is also the Clinical Co-Ordinator at Blacktown Clinical School for the Oncology Unit at Western Sydney University.  Jess is also the current Chair of the YOGA committee and passionate about teaching. Dr Milita Zaheed

Milita Zaheed

Dr Milita Zaheed is a Medical Oncologist based in Sydney. Wanting to diversify her skills, she completed additional specialist training in Cancer Genetics supported by a grant from NSW Cancer Institute. She now works part-time as a Staff Specialist in Cancer Genetics at Prince of Wales Hereditary Cancer Centre. As a trainee she thought she would never do a PhD but when the right opportunity and questions presented itself, she just had to be part of it. She has recently commenced a full-time PhD looking at what we can learn about heritability and cancer predisposition in the genomic era of cancer care. She is part of the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) program and also recent successful grant application to establish a novel precision oncology-focused clinic.

During her training she took time off to live in a coastal town for half the year, worked part-time and took leave to have both her children. She is passionate about peer welfare and maintaining work-life balance. Her other interests are in education, professional development, and equity in representation and access to care. Previously she was the National Medical Oncology Trainee representative for RACP Advanced Training Committee and MOGA and established a social media group for trainees and a professional development program for trainees in NSW. She is now an energetic member of the YOGA committee and was the Deputy-Chair in 2020-2021. You can find Milita on Twitter here: @MilitaZaheed
